TaxJar vs. Avalara: which sales-tax platform fits your operating model?

TaxJar packages US sales-tax reporting, calculations, and filing around order volume. Avalara combines calculation and returns with a wider compliance portfolio and deeper multi-system reach. The right answer depends on channels, taxable products, state obligations, exemptions, filing volume, and the work your finance team must reconcile.

The short answer

TaxJar is usually the simpler ecommerce shortlist; Avalara is the broader compliance shortlist.

Evaluate TaxJar first when the business is primarily a US ecommerce seller, transaction data comes from a manageable set of channels, and the team wants published order-based pricing, multi-channel reporting, economic-nexus tracking, real-time calculation on Professional, and AutoFile.

Evaluate Avalara first when sales span ecommerce, ERP, accounting, billing, point of sale, or several legal entities—or when exemption certificates, consumer use tax, international tax, complex product taxability, or broader managed compliance are material.

Do not choose on the starting subscription alone. Normalize the cost of calculations, every connected order, every filing, registrations, notices, exemption records, implementation, support, adviser review, and month-end reconciliation.

1. Start with the new published pricing—not an old review

TaxJar's pricing update took effect October 1, 2026. Starter begins at $39 per month for up to 200 orders and is designed around reporting and filing needs. Professional begins at $99 per month for the same order tier and adds real-time calculations, up to 10 integrations, historical-data access, phone support, onboarding, and a customer-success contact. TaxJar publishes progressively higher prices through 10 million monthly orders and says annual plans save at least 10%.

Starter includes two AutoFile credits per year, with additional filings currently priced at $50 each. Professional includes four credits and lists additional filings at $55. TaxJar also offers prepaid filing bundles for annual subscribers. A return is a filing unit, so a company filing monthly in 10 states may need roughly 120 credits per year before amended or local returns.

Avalara Select targets businesses below $50 million in annual revenue. Core Compliance lists $79 per state per month or $799 per state per year. Core Compliance + SST Services lists $69 per state per month or $699 per state per year and may provide state-funded calculation, filing, and remittance in up to 25 states for qualifying sellers. Companies above $50 million or with advanced needs receive custom pricing.

2. Compare a real annual cost—not the smallest plan tiles

Consider a US ecommerce company with 2,500 monthly orders, 10 states requiring monthly returns, and no SST subsidy. At current published monthly rates, TaxJar Starter is $219 per month, or $2,628 annually. After its two included filing credits, 118 additional filings at $50 would add $5,900, bringing the simplified annual total to about $8,528 before registration, backfill, flex fees, or adviser work.

If that business needs TaxJar Professional for real-time calculation, the published 2,500-order rate is $1,199 per month, or $14,388 annually. After four included credits, 116 additional filings at $55 would add $6,380, producing a simplified total of about $20,768.

Avalara Select Core Compliance at its annual rate would be 10 states × $799, or $7,990 annually, before any transaction, integration, registration, implementation, or out-of-scope charges confirmed in the order form. The example is not a quote or a universal winner: it shows why order volume, API calls, states, returns, SST eligibility, and contract scope must be modeled together.

Three-year ownership costSubscription + orders/API calls + states + returns + registrations + exemptions + integrations + implementation + notices + adviser review + internal close work

Use a full year of actual orders, refunds, returns, filings, and seasonal peaks. Averages alone can hide TaxJar flex fees or Avalara capacity needs.

3. Decide whether you need reporting or tax at checkout

TaxJar Starter is primarily suited to importing transaction data, producing reports, and supporting filings. Professional is the plan to evaluate when TaxJar must calculate tax in real time through its API or supported integrations. TaxJar states that Professional usage counts imported transactions and API activity toward the order tier; 10 calculation calls or rate lookups equal one order for pricing purposes.

Avalara Select includes AvaTax calculation, Managed Returns, nexus monitoring, and exemption data. Avalara says its wider platform connects with ecommerce, ERP, accounting, and other business systems. This matters when checkout, invoicing, renewals, ERP orders, marketplaces, and physical sales do not share one complete transaction record.

Build a source matrix before demonstrations. For every channel, identify the system that owns customer location, ship-from, product tax code, exemption status, tax calculation, tax collected, refund, marketplace-facilitator treatment, and general-ledger entry. A tax engine cannot reconcile data it never receives.

4. Treat nexus and registration as approvals, not alerts

Both platforms advertise economic-nexus monitoring, but a threshold dashboard is only as complete as its data. Employees, offices, inventory, trade shows, marketplace sales, acquired companies, and transactions outside connected systems may create or affect obligations.

Require a monthly nexus review that identifies the data sources, threshold status, owner, and conclusion for every state. When collection is approved, document the registration, effective date, product mapping, checkout release, ledger account, cash owner, first return, and treatment of sales between threshold crossing and registration.

TaxJar requires an active sales-tax registration before AutoFile enrollment and may require state e-file credentials. Avalara sells registration services separately and lists registration at $403 per location on its general pricing page. If the company may have collected late, involve a qualified tax adviser before configuring either platform.

5. Test products, exemptions, refunds, and marketplace sales

TaxJar's API supports product tax codes, item-level taxability, address data, exemptions, shipping, discounts, and refunds. Avalara combines product and jurisdiction content with exemption-certificate products and broader transaction-tax capabilities. Marketing scope is not evidence that your catalog and documents are configured correctly.

Select at least 30 actual transactions across taxable goods, exempt customers, digital products, services, subscriptions, shipping, discounts, bundles, credits, partial refunds, marketplace-facilitated orders, invalid addresses, and multiple fulfillment locations. Have a tax adviser establish the expected answer before comparing engines.

If exempt or resale transactions matter, test certificate collection, validation, customer and entity association, expiration, renewal, reporting, and audit retrieval. Ask exactly which exemption capability is included in the quoted plan and which team resolves invalid or missing documents.

6. Make filing and month-end reconciliation prove each other

TaxJar AutoFile submits returns and remittances for enrolled states. Avalara Managed Returns prepares, files, remits, and includes notice-management capabilities in Avalara's current description. Confirm local returns, prepayments, zero returns, amendments, notices, payment timing, guarantees, and escalation in writing.

The close should reconcile beginning tax payable, tax calculated, tax collected, refunds, marketplace-collected amounts, manual adjustments, remittances, and ending payable by jurisdiction. Trace each filed total backward to transactions and forward to the bank withdrawal. Test late orders, backdated credits, integration failures, and notices.

Assign distinct preparer, reviewer, approver, and cash-funding responsibilities. Automation reduces data handling, but it does not replace evidence that the return, ledger, and payment agree.

Controlled evaluation

Run this 30-day sales-tax pilot

  1. Approve the obligation matrix. Have an adviser document nexus, registrations, collection dates, product taxability, sourcing, exemptions, and legacy exposure.
  2. Map every channel. Inventory storefronts, marketplaces, invoices, billing, POS, ERP orders, credits, refunds, and acquired entities.
  3. Normalize both proposals. Price actual orders, API calls, states, returns, registrations, integrations, exemptions, implementation, support, and renewal terms.
  4. Recalculate a closed month. Compare at least 30 transactions with adviser-approved results and prior filings.
  5. Run the peak month. Test seasonal order volume and estimate TaxJar flex fees or Avalara capacity requirements.
  6. Prepare real returns. Produce workpapers, trace totals to source transactions, simulate payment approval, and count every filing unit.
  7. Break the workflow. Introduce a failed integration, late refund, amended return, expired certificate, tax notice, and missing credential.
  8. Prove the close. Reconcile calculated tax, collected cash, marketplace amounts, refunds, filings, remittances, and the general ledger by jurisdiction.
