Airwallex vs. Wise Business: which fits your international payment workflow?
Wise Business is a focused multi-currency account and transfer tool. Airwallex combines global accounts and transfers with cards, expenses, bill pay, payment acceptance, billing, and APIs. Price the whole workflow, not one advertised FX rate.
Evaluate Wise first for straightforward transfers. Evaluate Airwallex first for an integrated global finance stack.
Start with Wise Business when the core job is receiving, holding, converting, and sending currencies with transparent transaction pricing. Wise currently charges a one-time $31 setup fee for business account details, no monthly subscription, and variable sending and conversion fees starting at 0.23%.
Start with Airwallex when the company also needs entity-level accounts, corporate cards, expenses, bill pay, payment acceptance, subscription billing, approval workflows, or APIs. Its Explore plan is $0, Grow is $12 per active Spend user per month plus a team-size-based platform fee, and Accelerate uses custom pricing.
For either choice, request a live quote for the same currency pair, amount, funding source, recipient country, payout method, and delivery speed. Then test approvals, accounting, failed payments, refunds, and access controls.
Airwallex vs. Wise Business at a glance
| Decision point | Airwallex | Wise Business |
|---|---|---|
| Best first fit | Companies building an integrated multi-entity payments, spend, billing, or embedded-finance stack. | Businesses primarily receiving, holding, converting, and sending money internationally. |

1. Compare the exact corridor, not the headline FX percentage
Airwallex currently publishes a 0.5% markup above interbank rates for major currencies and 1% for other currencies. It lists free domestic USD and CAD transfers, local transfers to more than 120 countries, and SWIFT transfers at $15 to $25 depending on fee treatment.
Wise publishes a different pricing model: the exchange rate is not inflated, while a separate fee varies by currency and starts at 0.23%. Its US business pricing page lists a $6.11 fixed fee for receiving USD wire and SWIFT payments and free qualifying domestic receipts.
On a $50,000 major-currency conversion, a 0.5% markup is $250. Wise's advertised 0.23% floor would be $115, but that is not a valid quote for every currency pair. Compare the final recipient amount and every fee shown at the same moment; a percentage without the currency corridor is not a decision-grade price.
Compare the amount debited and the amount delivered, not merely the provider's named fee.
2. Decide whether you need a transfer tool or an operating platform
Wise Business is designed around international money movement: local account details, multi-currency balances, conversion, transfers, cards, invoices, payment links, team access, batch payments, and accounting connections. That narrower scope can reduce implementation burden when the business already has satisfactory banking, expense, AP, and billing systems.
Airwallex's scope is materially broader. Explore includes Global Accounts, FX and transfers, cards, expense management, reimbursement, bill pay, payment acceptance, invoicing, subscriptions, usage billing, and QuickBooks and Xero synchronization. Grow adds more conditional approvals, automation, vendor workflows, NetSuite and Dynamics 365 Business Central connections, and HRIS integrations.
The broader platform only creates value if it replaces handoffs or controls risk. List every system Airwallex would retire and every workflow it would own. If the answer is “none,” Wise's simpler transaction model may be more economical and easier to govern.
3. Model people, payment acceptance, and entity costs separately
Airwallex defines an active Spend user as someone who holds an employee card or submits, approves, or pays an expense, reimbursement, or bill during the billing period. Explore includes up to 10 free Spend users; Grow charges $12 per active Spend user and adds a platform fee based on team size. Additional fees apply to certain transactions and extra entities.
Airwallex also publishes payment-acceptance pricing of 2.8% plus $0.30 for domestic cards and 4.3% plus $0.30 for international cards. Wise separately lists card-payment acceptance at 2.9% plus $0.30 for domestic consumer cards and 4.2% plus $0.30 for international or business cards. Those rates concern collecting card payments, not ordinary bank transfers.
Money movement
Model each currency pair, local or SWIFT route, payment count, average size, speed, and who absorbs intermediary charges.
Operating platform
Include active users, entities, approvals, expenses, bills, accounting work, implementation, and systems retired.
Payment acceptance
Separate domestic, international, and business cards, average ticket, refunds, disputes, settlement currencies, and conversion.
4. Test the finance controls around exceptions
Successful transfers are the easy part. Finance needs to see who prepared, approved, released, changed, canceled, or retried a payment. Test role changes, beneficiary edits, duplicate detection, approval thresholds, exchange-rate locks, failed transfers, refunds, disputes, and the audit trail.
Then test the accounting output by currency and legal entity. Confirm how balances, conversions, fees, realized gains and losses, card settlements, refunds, and intercompany transfers reach the ledger. A low payment fee can be overwhelmed by monthly reconciliation work or unclear entity ownership.
Run this eight-part cross-border pilot
- Select real corridors. Use the five currency pairs and recipient countries with the highest expected volume.
- Capture simultaneous quotes. Record amount debited, amount delivered, rate, every fee, delivery estimate, and quote timestamp.
- Test local and SWIFT routes. Identify correspondent charges, recipient deductions, payment references, and tracking.
- Map entities and currencies. Define which legal entity owns every account, balance, card, receivable, and payable.
- Run approvals. Test beneficiary creation, payment thresholds, separation of duties, emergency access, and audit logs.
- Reconcile the ledger. Export or sync transfers, conversions, fees, cards, refunds, and settlement transactions.
- Break a payment. Use a safe test to understand rejection, cancellation, recall, refund, and support escalation.
- Review legal terms. Verify safeguarding, regulated entity, prohibited uses, reserves, limits, termination, and data export by country.

Frequently asked questions
Is Airwallex or Wise Business cheaper for international transfers?
There is no universal winner. Airwallex publishes a 0.5% markup above interbank rates for major currencies and 1% for other currencies. Wise says conversion and sending fees vary by currency and start at 0.23%. The cheaper provider depends on the exact currency pair, amount, funding method, payout method, and any transfer fee, so compare live quotes for the same transaction.
Which is better for a company that only needs occasional transfers?
Wise Business is the clearer first evaluation for occasional payments because it uses a one-time $31 setup fee for account details, has no monthly subscription fee, and charges per transaction. Airwallex Explore can also be free, but its advantage is more likely to appear when the company uses the broader account, card, expense, bill-pay, payment-acceptance, or billing platform.
Which is better for multi-entity finance operations?
Airwallex is the stronger first evaluation when the requirement includes entity-level accounts, employee cards, approvals, expenses, bills, payment acceptance, or API workflows. Wise Business supports team roles, accounting connections, multi-currency balances, and international payments, but presents a narrower operating surface.
Should either product replace the company's primary bank?
Not automatically. Treat both as regulated financial-service platforms with country-specific safeguarding and partner arrangements, not as universal substitutes for a commercial bank. Validate how funds are held, protected, accessed, and recovered in each relevant jurisdiction before concentrating operating cash.
Method and limitations
This guide compares public US product and pricing information reviewed on September 7, 2026. It does not rely on vendor payment, private demos, customer-review averages, or claimed hands-on experience. Availability, fees, rates, currencies, payout routes, limits, licensing, and safeguarding arrangements vary by country and can change.
